About Billy Steve Camirirwa: NGO Executive Director (Burundi)

In 2013, Billy returned to his hometown of Bujumbura after receiving a Bachelor of Business Administration and Information Technology from Symbiosis International University in India. Billy began an internship at a bank and planned on pursuing a career in the financial sector. His plans quickly changed after he decided to volunteer for four months with an organization working in Burundi’s countryside.

While volunteering, Billy experienced overwhelming poverty. He met people who didn’t have access to clean water or food and saw malnourished children and child brides. The experience was so impactful that Billy decided to leave the financial sector and dedicate his life to addressing extreme poverty.

Over the next five years Billy served with NGO’s dedicated to providing clean water to rural communities. In 2016, Billy also began his Master’s in Project Management at the University of Liverpool. After completing his Master’s degree and gaining experience with different non-profits, Billy decided to start ARK: a social enterprise which consults non-profit organizations.

ARK officially launched in 2020 and its services enable NGOs to address issues in the community that would otherwise be ignored. Specifically, ARK aids organizations in Cameroon and Burundi by providing the kinds of support that Billy saw was necessary while working in the charitable sector. In the coming months, ARK is also starting a farm in the Burundian countryside in partnership with the local community. This farm will cultivate various crops and raise pigs.

In everything he does, Billy is focused on empowering others and he is participating in ALI because he wants to learn how to practically lead like Jesus. Billy also believes the program will illuminate areas for growth in his character and relationship with Christ.

Thanks to donations made by generous members of the Kurumbuka community, Billy has no remaining scholarship needs! Any additional funds given through this page will be allocated towards future ALI scholarships.

Note: If you have experience in agriculture and would be interested in sharing your experience with Billy, please contact jordan@kurumbuka.org.
