About Grace Turyakira: NGO Executive Director (Uganda)
Grace was born in southwestern Uganda into a Christian family that had been following the Lord for three generations before her, and her parents raised her in a way that grounded Grace and her siblings in Christianity. In her teens she realized that salvation was personal and she received Jesus Christ as her redeemer. Her father passed away during her time at high school and she dropped out of school to provide for her family because her mother was ill.
In 2002 she was able to start her own business in industrial systems. This enabled her to pay for her siblings’ schooling, rent, and household necessities. Later on, her family encouraged her to go back to school. In 2005 she enrolled in a business administration course and began pursuing a certificate in business management. She married her husband, Dominic, in 2008, and they now have four children. Through Dominic’s work as an evangelist in a missions organization, Grace was introduced to the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), an NGO running schools for disadvantaged communities.
She began working as a fundraiser for ACSI Uganda, and was promoted to a role that would utilize her skills as an administrator for the organization. Grace’s role as an administrator continually developed, and she kept taking on more responsibilities within the organization. She began implementing ways for ACSI to improve and she was given the opportunity to receive further training. Grace was able to help the organization grow, transform policies, and improve the organizational structure, governance, and operations. She became a key leader within ACSI Uganda and was given the freedom to continually seek further educational opportunities that would equip her to excel in her increasing responsibilities. Gradually, Grace’s supervisors left the country and in 2019 she was named the Acting Executive Director of ACSI Uganda. Grace also serves on the board for Mission For All, an organization that focuses on the needs of vulnerable children and widows impacted by conflict in Uganda and the HIV/AIDS scourge of the 1980s.
Grace believes that holistic transformation for Uganda must begin in the classroom by shaping students through a biblical perspective. ACSI Uganda’s mission is to strengthen Christian schools and equip Christian educators who engage in transformational teaching and the discipleship of students. By assisting, encouraging, and developing schools they contribute to the public good through effective teaching that is biblically founded, academically rigorous, socially engaged, and culturally relevant.
Grace is thankful for how God has equipped her to lead, and she pursues a model of leadership that she sees exemplified in the life of Jesus. She has seen the negative effects of bad leadership as well as the positive impact of good leadership. Grace says that “leadership is first and foremost an act of service, a means to help others.” She believes that ALI can further equip her as a Christian leader. She is confident that, like the ACSI slogan says, “we are stronger together” and that through ALI she will gain the skills, connections, and further develop her understanding of Christ’s leadership. She says that “it’s possible to bring this country into one body for Christ-Kingdom Education. It’s very possible, but the how can become very challenging…I’m going in with full hands, but I need the skills to manage the hands and relationships and look deeper into this mission.” She is confident that God provides for His children, and she wants to make herself available because she believes that God wants to equip as many people as possible for this work.
Thank you for generously investing in Grace's leadership journey!
