About Dr. Phanuel Murenzi: Professor and Consultant (Rwanda)
Dr. Phanuel Murenzi was born into a farming family with a strong legacy of faith. His grandfather was a pastor and his father served as a church elder. Growing up, Phanuel remembers how his mother would help malnourished children in her native village. His parents' example and his own relationship with Jesus led Phanuel to develop a compassionate heart and a desire to help those who are suffering. These qualities aligned with his first career as a nurse.
After Phanuel lost his parents in the 1994 genocide against the Tutsi, he worked hard to provide for his two surviving sisters. He supported them as they completed their university degrees and, eventually, he had the opportunity to further his education as well. After witnessing the devastating effects of bad leadership in Rwanda, Phanuel decided to study Public Administration.
Phanuel excelled academically and after graduating he was invited to join the university staff as a guest lecturer. This new opportunity did not make Phanuel complacent. Instead, he worked harder. He continued to give generously, paying the school fees for children from his village and members of his extended family. He also continued to push himself in his studies and by 2016 he had completed his master's degree and doctorate in Public Administration at universities in South Africa.
After teaching for the first time, Phanuel realized that he had discovered his calling. He was passionate about inspiring change, and as a teacher he had a unique opportunity to broaden the perspectives of his students. Phanuel didn't just want to equip the leaders of tomorrow, but also influence the leaders of today. In 2008, he started an initiative called "Enhancing Leadership and Managerial Skills Program". The aim of this program is to train newly elected local authorities.
In 2019, Phanuel lost his job due to COVID-related budget cuts and he began to work as an independent consultant. He has served various companies and government agencies. His vision continues to be to equip transformational leaders throughout Rwanda. He wants to improve governance in Rwanda and help end corruption and discrimination. Ultimately, he wants to see the Gospel change the lives of more leaders.
However, as Phanuel continued to study and teach it became clear that sharing the theories of administration is not sufficient in promoting transformation. New knowledge must be supplemented by character formation and changed hearts. That is why Dr. Phanuel applied to ALI: he wants to learn how to lead like Jesus so he can teach others to lead like Jesus. Phanuel's passion to make a difference is insatiable, and even in a season without regular employment, he wants to give more of his time and energy to make a bigger impact.
Thank you for generously investing in Phanuel's leadership journey!
