About Philippe Dufatanye: Engineer (Rwanda)
Born in Goma, DRC, Philippe was the fourth born in a family of seven children. In 1994 his parents and five of his siblings died in the genocide against the Tutsi. Philippe and his siblings lived alone as children and carried themselves through primary school. Philippe and his family came to Rwanda and a man at his church sponsored his schooling for a year. He then attended a public school with a subsidized program for orphans, where he was able to complete the rest of his grade school education. Philippe was blessed with a scholarship to go to the University of Rwanda's College of Science and Technology where he studied civil engineering and environmental technology. It was during his time at university that he came to know Christ. At first he was skeptical about people who called themselves Christians because he didn’t see them following Jesus with their lives, but he knew that once he committed his life to Christ he wouldn’t be able to turn back again. To this day, he is proud to be a follower of Jesus. After the completion of his bachelor's degree, he pursued a master's degree in Geo-Information Science for Environment and Sustainable Development. Having been equipped academically, he feels that the sky is the limit for what he can do in his field.
Philippe married his wife, Murekeyisoni Prophete, in 2013. He enjoys reading and swimming. He currently works as a team lead for design engineers, working on a project called the Kigali Infrastructure Project, a 215 kilometer road to be constructed over four years. In the past, Philippe has worked as a civil engineer, site engineer, and project coordinator for a variety of companies. He notes that a lot of development throughout Africa was done by other countries, which is why it’s particularly exciting that local experts are working on these infrastructure projects. Serving people and improving their communities is something Philippe believes is a key element in the development of Rwanda.
Corruption is common in development projects, but Philippe is committed to facing this challenge. He testifies that being rooted in Jesus and having a high level of integrity is essential in paving a new way forward. His relationship with Jesus also motivates him serve his teammates who are far from home. Travel and living expenses make visiting their family members extremely difficult. The project is currently focused on Kigali, but Philippe believes it will continue to expand over time.
Philippe has been entrusted with leadership responsibilities in multiple circumstances, and his goal is to follow Jesus’ words to live as a servant to others. He believes this way of living can have a huge impact on society. His vision for transforming his country is to be a servant leader in his professional field so that he can train younger generations and develop future leaders. He loves people and feels particularly drawn to people who are often overlooked and is interested in helping people who have limited opportunities.
Philippe wants to be a part of ALI because he wants to learn how to develop communities through biblically-based leadership. He says “I have discovered how much the world needs servant leaders in all sectors of life, and as an Engineer in construction, I want to be a part of the positive change.”
