About Frederic Icyoyagennye: University Outreach Worker (Rwanda)
“It would be my life’s success if I can help people, see that they experience change, and are able to do the same for others.”
Frederic grew up in a rural village in Rwanda. His family struggled financially, and his mother worked hard to provide for them. He greatly admires his mother, who showed him the value of hard work, self-discipline, and respect for others.
Due to changing government policy for his region, Frederic received most of his primary and secondary school education for free. The education that he received gave him the opportunities that have led him to where he is now.
Frederic traveled to Kigali for the first time to attend university and study Business Information Technology on a bursary. City life was a huge adjustment; it was the first time he had seen roads, large buildings, access to the internet, and even electricity. The cost of living in the city made it very difficult for him to make ends meet.
In his first year at the university, Frederic met people from Navigators Rwanda Ministry. This university campus outreach builds relationships and teaches people about Jesus. Through Navigators, Frederic discovered Jesus and the life God had for him. Frederic remembers being easily angered throughout his life, believing that people must be punished for their wrongdoings. However, the mentors he met from Navigators taught him about forgiveness, empathy, and God's love.
Because of the transformation that Frederic experienced as a result of Navigators Rwanda Ministry, he later began working with them as a volunteer while he was still in university. Upon his graduation, Frederic had to make a difficult decision: to seek financial security with a job in information technology or to work on staff for Navigators and have to fundraise for his salary. Ultimately, his passion for helping others and seeing them grow has motivated him to continue working with Navigators.
Now, Frederic meets with students from different university campuses, sharing about Jesus and discipling students. He works in small groups, teaching about Jesus, how to pray and read the Bible, and how to lead others to do the same. He shares that their motto is "to know Jesus and make Him known, and to help others do the same."
Frederic is looking forward to the Abundant Leadership Program because he believes it will give him a strong foundation of valuable skills to increase his reach. He also sees it as an investment in his organization, as he can share all he has learned with other staff. He is excited to improve as a leader and witness those he is working with become stronger leaders.
Looking toward the future, Frederic wishes to be a strong leader for his family, his mother, and those he works with. His heart is to empower others to grow, pursue their dreams, and ensure that they are stepping out and doing the same.
