About Ronald Kavulu: COO & Founder (Uganda)
Ronald loves the work he does and he has seen the way it has helped people in Uganda where he is from. He was born in Kampala and drew a lot of inspiration from his parents. His dad would tutor him and would encourage him to be the best he can be and his mom runs a community based school that he supports her with. They left an impression on how to help people that are in need.
Ronald studied electrical engineering at Makerere University but has a background in telecommunications. He has 15 years experience of project management in segments like IT and advising in areas like education and agriculture. He currently works at Solid Rock in Uganda as the chief operations officer and country lead. They work to provide result-based solutions to various organizations in the public and private sector. Ronald deals with various community members on a daily basis as they do capacity building, management services and consulting.
He likes the work that he does because of how he provides people with opportunities for work. The situation in Uganda is that people go to primary school but as they increase levels of education, they drop out. Solid Rock offers people who are not in the school system alternative paths. For example, if they learn trades like welding or electrical installation they can go back to their home districts and start their own enterprises. Universities focus a lot on theory over practical skills and from this training, the people are able to become their own employers. They have seen results such as when they partnered with the German Agency for International Cooperation and trained and upscaled over 1600 Ugandan youth. They have also trained over 4000 people in financial literacy in different regions in Uganda. The results are evident and Ronald sees that they can have even more impact in the country.
ALI will empower Ronald as he says he is passionate about “scaling and the impact it can have”. He wants to acquire skills that will allow him to learn how to manage his growing team and organization. A company needs to be sustainable long term whether the leader is there or not, so he wants to be able to build up other leaders who can keep the organization going. Last but not least, he wants to meet others who are on the leadership development journey as they may help in finding solutions to challenges that may arise.
